ARNO: Networked XR Development System

This project has evolved through many acronyms representing an advanced platform being constructed in anticipation of digital mirror worlds by exploring visualization of the National Research Platform (NRP) HyperCluster, Nautilus.

ARNO
stands for Augmented Reality Nautilus Observatory, with ambitious goals to provide tools to monitor and manage a digital twin of the entire cluster within correct geospecific context to help aid remote assistance and maintenance of the deployed nodes across the nation. To add to that, additional ideas emerged to jump start an academic metaverse for visualization of all the interesting research taking place within Nautilus.

Feature Highlights

Development targeted the Microsoft Hololens2, Meta Quest I and II, Web Browsers (Pixel Streaming), and Windows/Linux Desktops. Users of these platforms are able to connect together in a shared multiplayer experience hosted on a Linux Container within the Nautilus Cluster. This was accomplished by leveraging the CollabViewer starting template to bootstrap multiplayer development and included additional features like a unifying Cross-Platform UI/UX that made various tools for annotation and manipulation of 3D objects available. Additionally, we also merged in a HololensViewer template that expands the original CollabViewer project to support Hololens 2 clients. Together these systems laid the foundation for us and provided a frame of reference for supporting persistent virtual environments that could reach a variety of hardware users.
